Threads: To Join or Not to Join?

Threads - What is it?

Social media has got a new player - Threads. Launched by Meta (the powerhouse behind Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp), Threads is a direct rival to Twitter. So far Threads has had phenomenal success with over 30 million users signing up - including many celebrities and well-known brands.

Similar to Twitter, Threads is text-based. Refreshingly, you don’t need to think about creating fancy visuals, maintaining a 'perfect grid' or researching the best hashtags - you simply write what you are thinking and hit 'post'.

Not another one!?

Plenty of people are asking same question: will Threads last, or is it a fad?

My guess is that Meta will pull out all the stops to make sure Threads is a success, but time will tell.

Should I use Threads for my small business?

The question that's probably on your mind is, "Should I use Threads to promote my business?"

Let’s look at the pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Increased Visibility: Being an early adopter often means you are rewarded with more visibility and engagement. We saw this with reels when they were first launched.
  • Lower Competition: In the early days there are fewer businesses on the app, so less competition.
  • Community Building: The whole idea of Threads is to allow you to interact with your followers in a more personal and ‘real’ way. In the same way Facebook groups foster relationships and communities, this is what meta wants to create on threads.
  • Nothing to Lose: If you don't like it, you don't need to carry on.

Cons:

  • It could be a distraction: You don’t want to get caught up in mindless scrolling.
  • No Scheduling: The app is very new and there's currently no way to track metrics or schedule posts. Meaning you need to post as you go.
  • Could be another Clubhouse: Like Clubhouse, Threads might blow up for a few months, before dying off. Meaning the time and energy you invest in it might be wasted.

Should I Join Threads?

It boils down to personal choice. If you have a large following on Instagram and use it regularly, you might want to consider joining Threads. I would recommend spending some time understanding the app, having conversations with your followers and gauging the potential value for your business.

However, if Instagram is not your main platform, or if you're already busy juggling multiple platforms, then Threads might not be the best fit for you.

As a compromise, you might want to join Threads with your personal account to test the waters. After all you've nothing to lose. If you don't like it then you can simply deactivate your account.
